I have the honour to invite your attention
to the extremely unsatisfactory condition of the Public Mortuary
in this Colony and the urgent necessity that exists for carry-
ing out without delay certain extensive alterations.

Dr. Hunter submitted his recommendations
as long ago as June last; but owing to the necessity of prepar-
ing plans and estimates it was not found possible to include
the work in the general Estimates for the current year. It
was suggested that a mall beginning should be made this year
with some of the minor alterations, and it was proposed that
the estimated cost of $1,000 should be debited to the vote for
Miscellaneous Works. Had this proposal been carried out the
bulk of the improvements would have been provided for in the
Estimates for 1904. Dr. Hunter, however, has submitted many
grave reasons for immediately carrying out the larger scheme,
the principal one being the serious risk incurred by all
employees in the Mortuary while it is suffered to remain in
its present condition. It is his opinion and he is supported
by the Principal Civil Medical Officer
that it is absolutely
necessary to carry out the extension and improvement of the
Mortuary without further delay. The present building and the
